Pirelli has announced that its Pirelli P Zero Slick tires have been selected by Dallara for a track-oriented version of its Stradale vehicle, the Stradale EXP.
During the research stage of the P Zero Slick, Pirelli’s engineers faced a multitude of technical challenges when dynamic loads, similar to that of a GT3 race car, were created on track by the 890kg Stradale EXP.
To combat this, the tire manufacturer carried out a period of development in which different structures and materials were tested, resulting in a softer compound tire being used on the front axle and a harder compound on the rear. This decision was made to ensure the Stradale EXP benefitted from a good dynamic balance, while a new generation of polymers were introduced to again provide the right balance between performance, grip, and temperature resistance.
Prior to the Stradale EXP making its official debut at a Pirelli P Zero Experience held at the Mugello circuit, the vehicle had completed over 9,000km on P Zero Slick tires at a multitude of racetracks including Barcelona, Misano and Vallelunga.
“With the tires developed for Dallara Stradale EXP, our goal was to offer maximum performance combined with the widest possible working range,” commented Pierangelo Misani, senior vice president of research and development and cyber, Pirelli. “As is also the case with GT cars, the target was versatility. We wanted a P Zero that was easy to use for gentlemen drivers, who need a tire that can offer clear feedback, but also suitable for the most demanding of drivers. We worked very well with the Dallara team: it is a company with which we share the same passion and the same objectives, starting with providing the maximum safety possible.”
With the Pirelli tires fitted, the Dallara achieved a lap around the Mugello circuit in 1m 45.837s.
