SUMMARY

 

The Automation Engineer works will work inat the EEngineering Test LabTest Lab.  The basic function of the automation position, is to support the maintenance and development of test stands.  This includes both data acquisition and control.  In addition to test stand support, the candidate must provide basic electronic and software support for miscellaneous applications in the lab. Supporting the design and development of electronics control, data acquisition and monitoring equipment for powered lab and manufacturing equipment applications.

 

The In addition to technical skills detailed below, the successful candidate will possess good excellent communication skills (, both verbal and written), the ability to interface with diverse individualsindividuals and groups, and possess strong planning and organizational abilities.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

 

Design new test stands
Specify electronic and mechanical hardware for new test applications, and for upgrade of existing applications.
Select vaious forms of instrumentation and use them
Write, upgrade, and troubleshoot test software (RSLOGIX and NI LabVIEW)
Make electrical schematics
Provide input on mechanical layouts
Develop test stand design concepts
Perform typical administrative requirements (stock requisitions, tool sheets, expense reports, capital expense projects, etc.)
Perform validation testing
Support APQP activities
Perform “special assignments” as assigned
Lab

Develop design concepts to test various electronic control mechanisms
Design test stands for various electronic controls and mechanical assemblies.
Troubleshoot issues in Test Lab related electronic controls, data acquisition & etc
Develop and revise PLC programs for test equipment & processes
Develop hardware/software to download programs to circuit boards
Some validation testing as time allows and department workload requires
Support activities related to APQP steps appropriate to insure development of reliable products and processes.
Work with New Product Development to develop new electronic mechaniPerform typical administrative requirements (stock requisitions, tool sheets, expense reports, etc.).

Develop design concepts for units to test various electronic and electro-mechanical control mechanisms

Develop test programs using National Instruments LabVIEW to test various electronic control mechanisms

Design electrical schematics for various test lab applications

Select/specify hardware, software, instrumentation, mechanical design, physical layout, and electrical schematics for various Test Lab applications

Perform all other tasks and “special assignments” as assigned

 

Lab

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

 

Bachelor of Science degree in engineering from an ABET accrediated university.  Typical canidates will have a degree in computer engineering, computer science, electrical engineering, or mechanical engineering.  Other technical degrees with the appropriate combination of experience will be considered.

 

Understanding of electrical schematics
Familiarity with industrial wiring (from 3 phase down to DC signal)
Expert operation of benchtop tools: multimeter, oscilloscope, power supply, etc
Ability to troubleshoot electrical circuits
Familiarity with software version control systems such as Subversion and GIT
Able to write software in NI LabVIEW and RSLOGIX
Familiar with National Instruments cDAQ and cRIO product lines
Familiar with typical automation equipment:  air cylinders, air valves, switches, DIN, terminal blocks, fusing, enclosures, etc.
Operation of basic office equipment and software (MS Office)
Exceptional interpersonal skills
Beneficial SKILLS AND/OR KNOWLEDGE

 

National Instruments TestStand and DIAdem
CAD experience (especially NX)
PCB design tools (Mentor Graphics and SPICE)
Controller Area Network (CAN especially the SAE J1939 protocol)
Familiarity with text based programming languages like C, C++, C# and Python
