Flexible HIL test solutions help automotive manufacturers advance battery management systems

Pickering Interfaces offers flexible test and simulation solutions to address pressing demands on BMS testing for automotive OEMs.

Pickering Interfaces, a leading supplier of industry-standard modular signal switching and simulation tools for use in electronic test and verification, discusses the company’s recent success with flexible solutions for BMS (battery management systems) test.

As electric vehicles (EVs) continue to advance, testing and validating their complex systems becomes increasingly critical. At the core of these vehicles lies the BMS – a sophisticated electronic system tasked with monitoring hundreds of cells and protecting the battery from damage. Validating BMS performance requires rigorous simulation across diverse operating conditions, early and often.

“Our industry-standard modular solutions help auto makers move from design validation to production test of BMS,” explains Noman Hussain, vice president – software and strategic business development at Pickering Interfaces. “Today’s BMS demands can require testing of a single system every 15 seconds, 24/7 – our modules deliver consistent, reliable test results for accurate validation and verification.”

Pickering’s solutions for BMS verification

Pickering provides effective solutions for automotive customers by offering platform-agnostic hardware and specific modules optimized for BMS testing.

Renowned French engineering manufacturing services provider, MSL Circuits recently won a tender for the manufacture and test of battery management systems. The order was with a major automotive company that wanted each BMS to be functionally verified as they came off the production line at a rate of four per minute. Having devised a test methodology, MSL turned to Pickering Interfaces for PXI battery simulation modules, chassis and support.

Maximizing multiple test standards in a single, modular solution keeps systems flexible and cost-effective

Pickering enables long-term flexibility for test and simulation systems through support for open industry standard platforms like PXI and LXI.

Unlike vendors tied to a single platform, Pickering provides PXI switching and simulation solutions that integrate into any vendor’s PXI chassis – as well as its own LXI/USB chassis.

PXI excels when timing synchronization, speed and high density are critical, while LXI/USB provides simple and convenient control options via Ethernet and USB interfaces. The ability to house multiple capabilities within a single unit further streamlines the testing process, reducing complexity and enhancing flexibility. Workloads can be optimized by partitioning to meet density, timing and cost demands. Pickering also simplifies test creation through unified software for PXI and LXI systems – engineers can use the same application to control LXI and PXI instruments without switching drivers or changing test setups.

Pickering offers modules ideal for BMS testing

Pickering solutions for BMS test include:

  • Fault insertion modules: high-current, high-density modules to simulate various faults when validating BMS, ECU (electronic control unit), or powertrain performance in a HIL (hardware-in-the-loop) system.
  • RTD simulators: modules for simulation of resistance-based temperature sensors, including both PT100 and PT1000 RTD sensor types that require fine setting resolution.
  • Thermocouple simulators: modules for simulation of thermocouples that can be used for sensor emulation in ECU testing.
  • Battery simulator modules: voltage and current simulation of Li-ion batteries during charge/discharge cycles, now with increased voltage isolation up to 1000V.

Pickering will have a BMS test demo available at these shows, as well as PXI and LXI/USB chassis with high voltage switching, RTD and fault insertion modules.
