Tundra Proving Ground is a winter testing facility located in Sodankylä, Finnish Lapland, approximately 150km north of the Arctic Circle. The proving ground provides vehicle manufacturers, suppliers and engineering organisations with natural-snow test tracks, workshops, offices and supporting infrastructure for cold-climate development programmes.
Originally designed and constructed in 2016 for a major European vehicle manufacturer, the proving ground has since been further developed by a team with decades of experience in winter testing, including developing the world’s first indoor winter test facility.
Tundra’s operating concept is deliberately compact, with a maximum of two independent test groups on site at a time. Each group can be allocated its own tracks, garage and office facilities, allowing programmes to operate independently without sharing their primary test infrastructure or relying on hourly track reservations.
The site offers multiple snow handling tracks, snow straights and a 2,700m snow circuit, together with climatic containers capable of reaching -40°C, fuel facilities and 22kW and 150kW EV charging.
Sodankylä provides a long and reliable natural-snow season. Analysis of Finnish Meteorological Institute observations for the four most recent winter seasons shows a median permanent snow-cover period of 185 days.
Despite its secluded Arctic location, the region is served by three international airports – Rovaniemi, Kittilä and Ivalo – and offers more than 9,000 accommodation beds in Sodankylä and the nearby ski resorts of Luosto and Pyhä.
Tundra’s philosophy is straightforward: rather than adapting the test programme to the proving ground, the proving ground is adapted to the programme.
