Automotive crash testing relies heavily on the use of high-speed cameras and advanced image analysis software to capture and interpret the intricate details of a range of different car crash scenarios. During a typical test, high-speed cameras record a crash event in ultra-fine temporal detail, typically at thousands of frames per second. This enables engineers to study the rapid sequence of events that unfold during a collision, such as the deformation of vehicle structures, the movement of crash test dummies and the impact forces involved.
Using advanced image analysis software, the digital footage can be meticulously processed to extract quantitative data such as displacements, velocity changes, deformation patterns and energy distribution throughout the crash.
