IAC builds dreams in China

IAC’s most exciting and comprehensive anechoic chamber project in China to date is now underway. The chamber is being constructed at Build Your Dreams (BYD) – within the R&D headquarters of its giant automotive manufacturing facility based in Shenzhen.

“This project for BYD is a strategic breakthrough in China,” said Geoff Crowhurst, chairman of IAC China. What we needed was a showcase project that could highlight our full range of capabilities. This one at BYD is it!”

The project comprises the full gamut of IAC anechoic testing technology, including a ‘pass by’ hemi-anechoic chamber both for two-wheel, and four-wheel drive buses and trucks, and a two-wheel-drive vehicle semi-anechoic chamber (VSAC) for general automotive testing.

The ‘Quiet Room’ – rather than a rolling road – is an anechoic chamber for tetsing noise emissions from stationary vehicles in idle mode. The chamber hosts noise vibration and harshness testing, allowing for fine tuning of aspects of the vehicles’ noise emissions, from the sound of the engine to the closure of the doors, horn etc.

A test suite with two reverberation chambers and an anechoic chamber is also included. This suite is used for the testing and development of body panels and components.

The “Jury Room” is constructed in a similar way to IAC studios – with modular sound-absorptive panels. Focus groups use the facility to rate the sounds emitted by vehicles: for example, the sound of the engine, indicators, and horn. Termed ‘opinion engineering’ this is useful in ‘adding value’ – or at least ‘perceived’ value to 21st century vehicles.

The facility is scheduled for completion by June 2011. To learn more, visit IAC at Automotive Testing Expo Europe 2011, on May 17, 18 and 19.
