Expo exhibitor interview: Gert Kain, IAG

FTIR measuring systems can help engine developers meet the challenges of exhaust gas analysis and testing, in critical emissions reduction, as IAG's division manager explains


What are the current trends in exhaust analysis and testing?
Developers of engines are being forced to reduce emissions, but in addition to reduction of critical gases such as CO2, it is expected that the focus will move toward other greenhouse gases, such as N2O. Based on the fact that some gases cannot be detected with conventional analyzers, and the uncertainty regarding regulations and which gases will have to be detected in future, the current trend is to use FTIR measuring technology.

What are the benefits of this technology?
It offers a number of advantages including lower costs for the measurement of multiple components and much lower costs for calibration; while conventional analyzers have to be calibrated every day, FTIR analyzers are calibrated once a year. As a result, the costs for labor and calibration gases are much lower. These systems can also be used to measure various greenhouse gases. As many additional components as required can be installed at a later date, if necessary even years after the system is first built. This makes investment in an FTIR analysis system much safer and more future-oriented.

How is IAG developing its technology to meet the demands of customers?
Ease of operation and maintenance are extremely important for our customers. Operating a FTIR analysis system means frequent refill of LN2, which has a dangerously low temperature. The automatic refill function on the IAG analysis systems minimizes hazard potential and improves user friendliness. In the case of power failure in the test cell, in most of the systems, the sample gas stays in the system and causes pollution, requiring maintenance afterward. IAG systems are automatically flushed in case of a power failure, which means systems stay clean and necessary maintenance is avoided. Meanwhile the operator interfaces of the IAG systems are simple and self-explanatory. All systems are delivered with an integrated complete gas components library including the methods for diesel, gasoline and natural gas. Users do not have to ask for other standard methods, they can simply select them as they are always onboard.
